When given a diagnosis that you need a dental crown, you probably imagine at least two more dental visits and having to wear a temporary restoration for a week or more. Perhaps you’ve been in the frustrating situation of having a broken or dislodged temporary crown. Perhaps you’ve had to call the dentist on the weekend or miss an important meeting due to an emergency visit to replace a broken temporary crown.
At Alsbury Dental, our dentists found this process tedious and tiresome, frustrating, and infuriating. Not only did we have to watch our patients’ irritation, but we were unhappy that we could not offer a better option, so we searched and searched until we found a solution.
Today, our patients enjoy same-day crowns in Burleson, TX!
- No temporary.
- One visit.
- Solid, beautiful, porcelain crowns.
It’s simple and spectacular! And it’s our privilege to offer this service to you and your family.
How Same-Day Crowns Are Possible
The technology is called CEREC, and it consists of a computer-aided design and manufacturing system, or CAD CAM. We employ a 3D imaging scanner to capture all aspects of a prepared tooth and opposing teeth, instead of taking a traditional putty impression. (This means that you won’t have to endure foul-tasting, messy, uncomfortable dental impression material that could make you gag.) Design software uses the 3D image as a baseline to design a blueprint for a new crown that will fit on the prepared tooth and against opposing teeth.
The doctor will select a CEREC Bloc, a ceramic block, in a shade that will match the teeth neighboring your prepared tooth. Your new crown’s blueprint and the CEREC Bloc will be submitted to a milling unit, located in our office. In about one hour, the unit will fabricate a precise restoration from the block. At this point, the dentist will permanently secure the new crown to your prepared tooth and check your occlusion, how your upper and lower teeth come together when your mouth is shut. After necessary adjustments, you’ll be all set to go, with your permanent restoration intact.
What to Expect
Instead of two visits, with a potential emergency visit between, you’ll schedule just one visit that will last approximately two hours. We will prepare your tooth and take the digital impression, then you can relax and watch a movie, read a book, talk on your phone, or listen to music while the CEREC machine mills your restoration.
Your CEREC crown will last as long as any ceramic crown, if you take proper care of it and your oral health. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and attend checkups and cleanings twice a year. If you experience any oral pain or notice abnormalities in your mouth, schedule a visit with the dentist.
When the Lab is Necessary
CEREC same-day dental crowns are ideal for teeth that show when you smile, because ceramic is a cosmetic material well suited for teeth located in the front of the mouth. Molars, those teeth in the back of the mouth, crush food. They endure significant forces that ceramic alone will not withstand. Therefore, when a molar requires a crown, the dentist will likely suggest a lab-made restoration made of porcelain fused to metal (PFM), precious metal, or zirconia (all white, non-metal). Lab-made restorations still require two dental visits, and you will wear a temporary between appointments.
