Dental Fillings

What are Dental Fillings?

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental-related problems. In its early stages, decay can be removed and the small hole that was created in the tooth can be filled. The filling procedure is done quickly and easily, and the majority of fillings can last for years and even decades. We use composite resin (tooth-colored) fillings so that they blend in well with the rest of your smile.

Why are Dental Fillings needed?

The most common reason for needing a filling is because you have a cavity. If caught early on, cavities can be filled and the decay is not able to go deeper into the tooth. If you forgo having a filling placed, the decay will eventually make its way down through the tooth until it reaches the pulp. Once the decay has reached the pulp, or nerve, of the tooth, a root canal is needed.

Who is a good candidate for Dental Fillings?

We will perform an examination and take x-rays to determine if you might need a filling. Oftentimes, we find these small areas of decay during your bi-annual checkup appointments. It is important to have fillings placed early on so that they are not able to get worse. Fillings can be done on both pediatric and adult teeth.

What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?

We administer a local anesthetic to carefully and fully numb the area. The decay is then removed from the tooth. The small hole that is left behind is prepped for the new filling. We match the color of your tooth with the color of the composite resin that we’ll use. The composite is then placed into the hole and smoothed out. It’s cured with a bright light to prevent it from falling out. With proper care and oral hygiene, your brand new filling can last for years. We can place multiple fillings at the same time; if they’re on the same side of the mouth.
